The Impact of Modus on Healthcare Equity

We talk about access to healthcare as if begins at the doctor’s office, but it doesn’t. It starts with the ride. If you cannot get to an appointment, it doesn't matter if you have insurance, a referral, or the right provider. The care might exist, but it is still out of reach.
In the United States, 5.8 million people delay medical care each year because they did not have transportation. That's millions of missed appointments, untreated conditions, and people trying to manage their health without the support they need. When care is delayed, things rarely stay the same. A missed appointment can turn into a worsening condition. That condition can become more expensive and more complicated to treat. Over time, that pressure shows up in every part of someone’s life, from their ability to work to their overall stability.
Most people aren't missing care because they do not value their health. They are missing care because the system assumes they have a car, flexible work hours, or someone who can take them. A lot of our neighbors do not. They are often choosing between a shift and an appointment, between paying for gas and picking up a prescription, between asking for help and going without. That's not just a healthcare issue, it's a systems issue, and transportation sits right at the center of it.
This is where Modus comes in. We work with healthcare providers and community partners to make sure people can get to the care that already exists for them, consistently with drivers they know and trust because consistency is what changes outcomes; one ride can help in the moment, but reliable rides change what is possible over time. They make it easier for someone to stay on a treatment plan, pick up prescriptions when they need them, and keep appointments without starting over each time something falls through.
Transportation is one of the simplest ways to make healthcare more equitable, and it is one of the most overlooked. When the ride is reliable, everything connected to it gets stronger. With reliable transportation, people are more likely to stay healthy, miss fewer days of work, and have a real chance at stability. This isn't hypothetical, it's happening every day in our community.
When you support Modus, you're helping remove a barrier that has nothing to do with effort and everything to do with access. That is what healthcare equity looks like in action, and it starts with something as simple as a ride.
